THE
ORGANIZATION
Kootenay Rockies Tourism is a
Destination Marketing Organization (D.M.O.) registered as a society with the Ministry of
Finance and Corporate Relations, Province of British Columbia.
The principal mandate of Kootenay Rockies Tourism is to
generate tourism revenues by the development, coordination and execution of collaborative
destination marketing programs on behalf of the members of Kootenay Rockies Tourism.
To this end the Association has contracted with Tourism British Columbia, a Crown
Corporation of the Province of British Columbia whose mandate includes marketing the
provinces tourism product.
Tourism British Columbia was established as a legislated corporation in 1997, with funding
levels linked to the B.C. tax on accommodation, and with management authority held by an
independent Board of Directors.
Kootenay Rockies Tourism operates from the
Kootenay Rockies Tourism Building in Kimberley, British Columbia. It is structured as a user
pay - user governed organization. The Board of Directors is
elected by the active membership at the Annual General Meeting and is charged with the
responsibility of directing policy by which the management functions. |

Geographical
boundaries which define the destination for which marketing programs are
conducted include the southeast corner of British Columbia, a region composed of a series
of north/south extending valleys and mountain ranges including the Monashee, Columbia,
Selkirk, Purcell and world-renowned Rocky Mountains. These boundaries include the Alberta
border with B.C. in the east, the U.S. border with Canada in the south, and extend north
to the centres of Revelstoke and Golden and west to Boundary country.
The Kootenay Rockies destination of British Columbia is one of six designated destinations of BC. Others include The
North, The Cariboo, Thompson Okanagan, The
Island and Vancouver, Coast and Mountains.

Industry Support Members are not considered to be active members of Kootenay
Rockies Tourism in terms of eligibility to vote or hold office but are entitled and

THE STRUCTURE
Kootenay Rockies Tourism is a user pay - user governed
marketing organization with a structural orientation based on tourism product. Membership
and Board of Directors categories reflect this orientation; they
are not classified by any geographic designation within the region, only by type of
product marketed to the destination visitor.
Four directors from each of the four membership categories and six directors-at-large are
elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Association.
As well as directing the policies by which management operates, the Board
of Directors are responsible for allocating the overall marketing budgets which are
cost shared through contractual agreement with partner
organizations such as Tourism B.C.
Within these budget allocations each visitor activity has its own particular set of
marketing initiatives based on distinct strategies. Project selection and promotional mix
are determined by the Kootenay Rockies Tourism staff and are
subject to program approval by Tourism BC.
