Kootenay Rockies History

1. The Crowsnest Pass Railway Route

This comprehensive website presents the history of the Crowsnest Pass Railway Route and includes special sections on Kaslo's S.S. Moyie, the restored railway lake steamer, and The Canadian Museum of Rail Travel in Cranbrook, with its restored great trains of Canada.

The site contains many original photos, maps and pamphlets..some never published before!

2. Fort Steele Heritage Town - History and Themes

This module of the Fort Steele Heritage Town Website interprets five themes that tell this region's story, particularly as it relates to the restored gold rush town.

The themes are Kootenay Gold Rush, North-West Mounted Police, Victorian Life, Railroading and Agriculture.

3. Revelstoke History

An informative and interesting capsulization of the history of Revelstoke and area, complete with an on-line store featuring further historical readings.

4. Halcyon Hot Springs History

The Arrow Lakes Historical Society provides this entertaining account of the history of Halcyon Hot Springs, originally opened in 1894, and closing with the fire of 1955, which saw the Hotel burned to the ground.

In March of 1999 the Halcyon Hot Springs Resort was reopened after 44 years with chalets, campsites and plans for a 80 room lodge.

5. S.S. Moyie History

The sternwheeler S.S. Moyie, a National Historic site in the Village of Kaslo, British Columbia, is one of the most significant preserved steam passenger vessels in North America.

This brief history contains good clickable historic photos including a great shot of the Moyie steaming down Kootenay Lake.

6. Nelson History

An interesting account of the history of the City of Nelson - "The Queen City".  Also includes a section on "Gunpowder Gertie" and historical photographs of sternwheelers of Kootenay Lake.

7. Nakusp and Nakusp Hot Springs History

A quick, easy and interesting history of both Nakusp and the Nakusp Hot Springs. This site has some wonderful old photos, all clickable for enlargement.

8. Sandon History

The Sandon Historical Society presents a visit to Sandon, the capital City of the Silvery Slocan, known in the 1890's as the Monte Carlo of North America

This mining and social history provides a fantastic amount of information and great photos too.

9. Royal Alexandra Cafe

We've included this site on the sumptuous Royal Alexandra Cafe, the favorite banquet hall of the famous Canadian Pacific Hotel 'Royal Alex' of Winnipeg, not only because of what it was, but also what it has become!

10. Crowsnest Highway History

The Crowsnest Highway #3 is Western Canada's Old Road to the coast and is the Kootenay Rockies' southern route across the region.  It is 1,800 kilometres in length, travelling from Hope, British Columbia to Medicine Hat, Alberta.

11. St. Eugene Mission

The St. Eugene Mission was established in the late nineteenth century by Father Coccolla.  This historic building was an Indian Residential School. 
The former school has been transformed into a resort which includes an Interpretive Centre and an Arts and Crafts Cooperative.  The Centre provides visitors with an aboriginal perspective of the area, its history and its people, and also provides guided excursions in the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa.
